How do you choose the right transponder?

Two keys with similar housings may contain different chips. Selection depends on electronic identification and application compatibility before the appearance of the key shell.

Identify the chip family

The type and status shown on the transponder reading screen are the starting point for selection. Fixed-code and cryptographic families have different characteristics. Subtypes within the same family may not be directly interchangeable either.

Check not only the chip number but also the target vehicle, the current key status and the intended operation. Being able to read a transponder does not necessarily mean it can be cloned or rewritten.

Blank chips and pre-coding

Some applications prepare a blank transponder for the relevant vehicle system before pairing it with the vehicle. This pre-coding is not the same as registering the key with the vehicle. The chip must be a type supported by the preparation application.

Use current application information

IEA’s transponder release notes distinguish reading, identification, generation and cloning. Support added for one function does not imply support for every other function. Check both the version installed on your device and the relevant release note.
